At the direction of Congress, the ABPP has identified, surveyed, and assessed significant sites associated with the American Revolution, the Civil War, and the War of 1812. Sites included in those reports, and in this feature dataset, are eligible for Battlefield Land Acquisition Grants. DATA ON THIS LAYER IS FOR COUNTY INTERNAL ANALYSIS USE ONLY. <DIV STYLE="text-align:Left;"><DIV><DIV>The Battlefield Boundary feature class represents the polygon locations of the “study areas” identified in the draft Update to the Report on the Nation’s Civil War Battlefields, for the principal battlefields of the Civil War. The update to the report was authorized by the Civil War Battlefield Preservation Act of 2002 and last revised in 2014.The draft report defined “study area” as the maximum delineation of a battlefield, providing the tactical context of the battle and including all places related or contributing to the battle event. The Battlefield Boundary is where troops deployed and maneuvered before, during, and after the engagement. Feature level metadata entered in the attribute table provides additional information about the source and creation of each polygon. Grant applicants should use the Civil War 1993 Survey feature dataset for this purpose. </DIV></DIV></DIV> Esri ArcGIS 12.9.4.32739 1 -137.999996 -48.000068 84.224349 -89.999991 Boundaries for the principal Civil War battlefields identified in the draft Update to the Report on the Nation’s Civil War Battlefields, last revised in 2014, were collected as part of this feature dataset. All features within this dataset are represented as polygons, which were digitized from paper maps. The boundaries were determined by subject matter experts based on historical records and drawn onto standard USGS topographic quadrangle maps. The accuracy of each polygon is entered in the feature level metadata for each feature contained within the dataset. Duplicate battlefield boundaries with the same geometry and feature level metadata were copied into an alternative feature layer, then merged into a single battlefield boundary in the primary feature dataset. Duplicate battlefields boundaries with different geometry were copied into the same alternative feature layer; however, the incorrect duplicate boundary, as identified by NPS ABPP staff, was then deleted from the primary layer. Missing battlefield boundaries were imported into the feature dataset after being correctly projected. Previously mislabeled battlefield codes were edited based on original survey documentation. The resulting feature class contains one record for each battlefield boundary, which may include discontiguous polygons. This dataset features the battlefields identified in the 2014 draft Update to the Report on the Nation’s Civil War Battlefields; however, it does not include all the battlefields identified in the report, as some have yet to be digitized from their associated USGS paper map formats. The attribute information of the battlefields included has been reviewed for completeness and accuracy by NPS CRGIS staff to help ensure data quality. The attributes collected in this feature dataset meet the requirements of the National Park Service Cultural Resource Spatial Data Transfer Standard. Attributes have been reviewed by the NPS CRGIS staff for accuracy and consistency. Data contained within this feature dataset was determined by subject matter experts based on historical record, then drawn onto USGS maps before being digitized into shapefiles. The rated accuracy of this method cannot be officially confirmed due to various error potential. Positional accuracy, where known, is documented in feature level metadata for each polygon.
