Impervious surfaces limit natural infiltration rates into the ground. When impervious surfaces data is collected by contractors, they use a 200 square foot minimum area threshold. The initial impervious features were compiled from 1' resolution imagery collected in leaf-off conditions in March 2011 by Sanborn. Since then additional features have been added from As-Built Plans. The Source and Date of the features are indentified in the Source and Update field of each feature. Impervious surfaces (pavement, buildings, structures, includes compressed areas such as dirt roads, also pools)&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;In the spring of 2017, the Commonwealth of Virginia, through the Virginia Geographic Information Network Division (herein referred to as VGIN) of the Virginia Information Technologies Agency (VITA) contracted with Fugro Geospatial, Inc. to provide aerial data acquisition, ground control, aerial triangulation and development of statewide ortho quality DEM and digital orthophotography data. The Virginia Base Mapping Program (VBMP) update project is divided into three collection phases: In 2017, Fugro flew the eastern third of Virginia at one foot resolution, with options for localities and other interested parties to upgrade resolution or purchase other optional products through the state contract. The middle third of Virginia will be flown in 2018 and the western third in 2019. Ortho products are 1-foot resolution statewide with upgrades to 6-inch resolution tiles and 3-inch resolution tiles in various regions within the project area. The Virginia Base Mapping project encompasses the entire land area of the Commonwealth of Virginia over 4 years. The State boundary is buffered by 1000'. Coastal areas of the State bordering the Atlantic Ocean or the Chesapeake Bay are buffered by 1000' or the extent of man-made features extending from shore. This metadata record describes the generation of new Digital Terrain Model (DTM) and contours generated at 2-foot intervals. All products are being delivered in the North American Datum of 1983 (1986), State Plane Virginia North. The vertical datum was the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88) using GEOID12B.&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt;</idAbs>
<idPurp>The purpose of this dataset is to help assess the impervious surfaces in the county, particularly for commercial and industrial parcels. Such assessment can be useful for storm water modeling and management, storm water fee assessment, planning, build-out analysis, mapping, and overlaying with other datasets as needed.
The collection of aerial photography and production of an ortho quality DEM and orthophotography was executed to capture the existing ground conditions at a specific point in time for the purpose of GIS analysis. Orthophotography along with DEM data typically provides an accurate base for digitally representing geographic features upon which a GIS is built. The Virginia Geographic Information Network Division (VGIN) is the lead public agency in the Commonwealth for spatial data and GIS. VGIN's mission is to facilitate the cost-effective development and use of spatial data, GIS, and related technologies in organizations throughout the Commonwealth.

<suppInfo>This is a dataset showing impervious surfaces in Prince William County, Virginia. Impervious surfaces are human-created surfaces that do not allow water to permeate through them. Impervious features include paved surfaces such as buildings, roads, sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, swimming pools, tennis courts, compacted dirt roads, athletic track, water treatment facilities, etc. They do not include structures over water such as docks, bridges, etc. and railroads. Natural impervious surfaces such as mountains, rock outcrops, etc. were not considered impervious for this dataset. This dataset was compiled in different ways for commercial/industrial parcels and for all other parcels. For commercial/industrial parcels, the existing planimetrics were enhanced by adding all impervious features that were not already captured such as sidewalks, dirt roads, paths on golf courses, etc. and any other smaller impervious structures missing in the commercial/industrial parcels. The minimum mapping unit for this dataset is 200 sq ft - structures below 200 sq ft were not required to be captured but may or may not have been captured. However, accuracy assessment on the dataset is performed based on the 200 sq ft minimum mapping unit. The data was overlaid with commercial and industrial parcels using an Identity operation in ArcGIS. This enables appropriate summary of impervious by parcels for these types of parcels.</suppInfo>
